the balm of my existence by Linda M. Crate

the balm of my existence

i could drink to better futures

a world where discrimination

was nipped in the bud,

and people were truly allowed

to be themselves;

and people didn't try to smother

others with their beliefs and opinions

as if they were facts—

i could drink to better futures

where people weren't

persecuted for being different,

my entire life i never fit in;

pretended to be straight for so long

i almost believed it

but i am done hiding who i am

or being locked behind that closet—

everyone might not understand,

but everyone is not for me anyway;

that's okay

i will keep speaking my mythos

and my language until my people

find me—

rescued from reality,

i find fantasy the balm of my existence;

give me dragons and give me vampires

i want elves and faeries and forbidden magical forests

over humanity any day.
