Tealight Talks - "Nature" Part 1

Each month, the editors of Tealight Press interview each other with questions based on the months theme. For this months 'Tealight Talks', Sash interviews Matt on Tealight's topic for March, "Nature."

What's a natural phenomenon that holds a particular fascination for you?

The Northern Lights - ever since reading about them when I was younger in His Dark Materials and seeing pictures of it growing up, it’s always been such an incredible and fascinating phenomena to me. I travelled to Iceland a few years ago with the intention of seeing them but the entire trip was affected by a severe snow storm. I’d love to go back and see them one day.

We come to associate certain times of year with feelings, memories etc. Give us a snapshot of a memory from the month of March.

A nice memory of March has been the beginning of Spring - I love winter but I didn't realise how bleak I felt until the sun started to come out and the air felt fresher.

"It is human nature to think wisely and act foolishly" - Anatole France Can you tell us about a time you've acted against your better judgement? What did you learn from the experience?

Growing up I was quite bad at saying no to people, so I’d often find myself in situations I didn’t want to be in because I was too afraid to let someone down. I’ve definitely gotten better at that as I’ve gotten older! I think learning to establish boundaries and looking out for your own best interests is so important.

What is an environmental issue that you feel strongly about?

Littering! It’s such an easily prevented thing and it’s no hassle to just tidy up after yourself so it really makes my blood boil when I see people doing it. It’s so selfish. Maybe that seems trivial but it all contributes to the bigger picture of environmental issues! To loop back to Iceland I went on a whale spotting tour on my trip and part of it involved learning about the impact litter has on sealife - it was eye opening.

What's your favourite animal and why?

Someone asked me this recently and I have such a hard time answering this because I’m such an animal person, but maybe deer! They’re so gorgeous and such a special animal. I love them! I'm lucky enought to have met a few.
